Norman, wake up! Modern Centexturlism?

What do these modern and Norman buildings have in common? More than you may think. The modern dormitory is by Louis I Kahn and is part of the same campus, Bryn Mawr College, as the Norman / Collegiate style buildings that preceded it. Kahn's use of slate veneers, light turrets, and crenelations are subtle but meant to make his mid 20th century Edman Dormitory fit into the Bryn Mawr campus. Kahn may have been the first modern contexturalist. The entry door is a nice detail and the main lobby has a castle feel. If you visit make sure to schedule an appointment to get inside--though some architects just sneak in to get photos. Got Architecture?
